Scotland Meetup on “Trends in Data Communications Research”

IEEE Communications Society’s Young Professionals committee is delighted to bring together leading academics along with early career researchers and PhD students from all over Scotland for an evening of talks and professional networking. This meetup has been themed around current trends in data communications research from applications and technologies towards architectures and networks with keynote talks from leading research and industry institutions including University of Edinburgh, Keysight Technologies (the world’s leading electronic measurement company) and University of Glasgow.

We hope this event will be a great opportunity to learn about related work in data communications research in Scotland, to talk about collaboration opportunities and to meet new people. The talks will cover hot topics around the recent advances in self-healing, intelligent cellular networks, advances in network function virtualisation (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) as well as security challenges of the IoT eco-system and the promises of the 5th generation mobile architecture (5G).

Food and drinks will be provided during the evening. We look forward to seeing you there!

Frankie GarciaTitle: 5G Vision, Technologies and Challenges

Bio: Educated at Lancaster University, Francisco Garcia is currently Master Scientist with Keysight Technologies in Edinburgh and is an Honorary Professor of Informatics at Edinburgh University. He has decades of experience working in communications systems and his focus today is on the evolution of 5G technologies targeting innovative test and measurement science to help with this evolution. In particular, the current focus is on 5G Radio Access Networks, Multi-RAT co-exitance, SDN/NFV and Cellular-IoT.

19:00 Dr. Paul Patras (University of Edinburgh, School of Informatics)

Title: All your Internet connected things are belong to us

Bio: I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) and Chancellor’s Fellow in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and a member of the Institute for Computing Systems Architecture (ICSA). I co-lead the recently established Informatics Internet of Things research programme and am also affiliated to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Pervasive Parallelism and the Security & Privacy group. Previously, I was a research fellow at the Hamilton Institute of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Between 2007–2011 I was a research assistant at IMDEA Networks (Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Networks). I held visiting research positions at the University of Brescia (2017, 2015), Northeastern University (2016), Technical University Darmstadt (2016), and Rice University (2010).
